According to Urban Dictionary, a dive bar is a “well-worn, unglamorous bar, often cheap, simple selection of drinks to a regular clientele.” If you’d prefer to spend your time at a cozy dive and enjoy a cold $3 pint compared to a $12 cocktail in a chair that looked like it was remodeled from the furniture section of the local thrift store. As Colorado’s dive bars are becoming more and more rare and developments continue to occur, good dive bars are extremely hard to find and it is easier to get distracted by all of the shiny new bars and restaurants opening all over the cities. Fortunately, there are still some remaining classic dives and they deserve your attention too!
Ace-Hi Tavern
Ace-Hi Tavern has been a favourite for bar fans since the year of 1961 when Leo Stillman bought the old Opera House restaurant on historic Washington Avenue. It is not a surprise that one of the Colorado’s best dive bars is located in this town since alcohol was responsible for putting Golden on the map. This bar, being a Western-themed and Colorado-proud with old-fashioned steer horn fancied up with Mardi Gras beads located above the cashier, this dive bar continue to be a place where individuals come after a long day at work or a tough day of classes. Each day you come to Ace-Hi Tavern, you are surprised with fun activities. On Mondays, they offer service industry night, on Tuesdays, they offer a trivia night, on Wednesdays, they offer wicked Wednesday specials, Thursday is when the ladies night & karaoke as well as a dollar tap & well, Friday and Saturday is when people come from a karaoke night, then on a Sunday, there you are able to relax and have a fun day at this bar. In fact, one of the bar’s chalkboard states, “Talk to each other and get drunk.” Fortunately, this is not a hard thing to do for in this place, there is a big four-sided bar and a few comfortable booths where you are able to chat to the bartender, who pours inexpensive drinks, and other bar goers.

Limited menu, but our pretzel, antipasti & brisket were all delicious. Steady flow of customers. I think we have stumbled onto a new favorite dive bar.”

The food was standard but super delicious and the cook was a damn sweetheart, so accommodating as he ran our food to us and made sure we had everything we needed. We will absolutely be back.”
